A deliciously sweet and crunchy Toffee Chex Mix featuring buttery toffee coating baked over crispy Chex cereal. Perfect for snacking or gifting during festive occasions, this mix combines the richness of brown sugar toffee with an optional crunch of chopped nuts for added texture.

Ingredients

Toffee Sauce

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp salt

Main Mix

  • 4 cups Chex cereal (any variety)
  • Optional: 1 cup chopped nuts

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) to ensure it’s ready for baking the coated cereal mix.
  2. Melt Butter and Sugar: In a medium saucepan over low heat, melt the unsalted butter. Stir in brown sugar until the mixture becomes bubbly and smooth, creating a toffee sauce base.
  3. Add Flavorings: Remove the saucepan from heat and stir in vanilla extract and salt to enhance the toffee flavor.
  4. Combine with Cereal: In a large bowl, add the Chex cereal along with the optional chopped nuts if using. Pour the melted toffee mixture over the cereal and gently fold until all pieces are evenly coated.
  5. Bake the Mix: Spread the coated mixture onto a parchment-lined baking sheet in an even layer. Bake in the preheated oven for about 15 minutes, stirring halfway through to ensure even baking and toffee distribution.
  6. Cool and Serve: Remove from the oven and let the mix cool completely on the baking sheet. Once cooled, break apart any clusters and serve or store in an airtight container.

Notes

  • Using unsalted butter allows control over the salt content but adjust seasoning accordingly if salted butter is used.
  • The optional nuts can add extra crunch and flavor; try pecans or walnuts.
  • Ensure to stir halfway through baking to prevent burning and achieve even coating.
  • Allow the mix to cool completely so the toffee hardens and the crisp texture sets.
  • Store in an airtight container to maintain freshness for up to two weeks.
