Delicious and elegant puff pastry rolls filled with creamy cream cheese and smoky salmon, flavored with fresh dill and black pepper. Perfect as an appetizer or a sophisticated snack, these golden-baked rolls are easy to prepare and sure to impress.

Ingredients

Pastry

  • 1 rectangular puff pastry sheet

Filling

  • 100 g cream cheese (such as St Môret or ricotta)
  • 2–3 slices smoked salmon
  • 1 tbsp finely chopped dill
  • Freshly ground black pepper, to taste

For brushing

  • 1 egg yolk

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven: Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F) to ensure it reaches the correct baking temperature by the time you’re ready to cook the rolls.
  2. Prepare puff pastry: Unroll the puff pastry sheet onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, making sure it lies flat without any folds.
  3. Spread cream cheese: Evenly spread the cream cheese over the entire surface of the puff pastry, creating a smooth, consistent layer.
  4. Layer smoked salmon: Arrange the slices of smoked salmon evenly on top of the cream cheese layer, covering the pastry but not overlapping excessively.
  5. Add dill and pepper: Sprinkle the finely chopped dill over the salmon, then season with freshly ground black pepper to taste for added flavor.
  6. Roll the pastry: Carefully roll the puff pastry lengthwise into a tight log, ensuring the filling stays inside and the roll is compact.
  7. Chill the roll: Place the rolled pastry log in the freezer for 10–15 minutes to firm up, making it easier to slice cleanly.
  8. Slice the roll: Remove from the freezer and slice into 1 cm thick pieces, maintaining even thickness for uniform baking.
  9. Arrange on baking sheet: Lay the slices flat on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, spacing them evenly to allow for puffing during baking.
  10. Brush with egg yolk: Brush the tops of each puff pastry roll slice with the beaten egg yolk to achieve a glossy, golden finish as they bake.
  11. Bake until golden: Bake in the preheated oven for 15–20 minutes or until the rolls are puffed up and golden brown.

Notes

  • Use full-fat cream cheese for the creamiest texture, or substitute ricotta for a lighter option.
  • Chilling the rolled pastry before slicing helps keep the rolls intact and prevents filling from oozing out during baking.
  • For a more intense smoky flavor, consider adding a few capers or a squeeze of lemon juice to the filling.
  • Serve warm or at room temperature as an elegant appetizer or party snack.
  • Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days and reheated briefly in the oven.
