Topped with mozzarella cheese, pepperoni, marinara sauce, and optional veggies, they bring a fun twist to burger night with melty cheese and familiar Italian seasonings. Perfect for a casual dinner or game day treat.

Ingredients

Beef Patties

  • 2 lbs (900g) lean ground beef (80/20 or 90/10)
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp garlic powder (or 2 cloves minced fresh garlic)
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1/2 tsp dried basil
  • 1/2 tsp salt (kosher)
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • Optional: 1/4 cup finely grated Parmesan cheese

Burger Assembly

  • 6-8 burger buns (brioche or potato recommended)
  • 1.5 cups (350g) pizza or marinara sauce
  • 8 oz (225g) sliced mozzarella cheese (or provolone blend)
  • 4 oz (110g) thin-sliced beef pepperoni
  • Optional toppings: 1/2 cup sliced mushrooms, 1/4 cup diced green bell pepper, 1/4 cup diced onion, 1/4 cup sliced black olives, sliced jalapeños
  • 2 tbsp olive or vegetable oil (for cooking)
  • Optional garnish: Fresh basil leaves, grated Parmesan cheese

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Patties: In a large bowl, gently mix ground beef with Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, oregano, basil, salt, pepper, and optional Parmesan cheese. Be careful not to overmix to keep the patties tender. Form 6-8 evenly sized patties, pressing a small dimple in the center of each to ensure even cooking. Chill patties in the fridge for 15-30 minutes if desired to help them hold shape.
  2. Prepare Toppings and Toast Buns: Prepare optional toppings by slicing mushrooms and dicing bell peppers and onions. Sauté these veggies lightly if using. Have thin-sliced pepperoni and cheese ready. Lightly toast the burger buns for 1-2 minutes in a dry skillet or under the broiler to prevent sogginess later.
  3. Cook the Patties: Heat 1-2 tablespoons of olive or vegetable oil in a large skillet or griddle over medium-high heat. Cook the patties for 3-5 minutes per side until a golden-brown crust forms and the internal temperature reaches 160°F (71°C). Avoid pressing down on patties to retain juices. Once cooked, remove and set aside.
  4. Assemble the Pizza Burgers: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) or use the broiler. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Place the toasted bottom halves of the buns on the sheet. Layer each with a cooked patty, 2-3 tablespoons of pizza or marinara sauce, 1-2 slices of mozzarella cheese, pepperoni slices, and any other desired toppings like sautéed veggies.
  5. Melt the Cheese: To melt the cheese, either bake the assembled buns in the oven at 375°F (190°C) for 5-8 minutes until bubbly, broil for 1-3 minutes while watching closely, or cover the assembled burgers in a skillet with 1 tablespoon of water and steam over low heat for 3-5 minutes until cheese melts.
  6. Finish and Serve: Remove burgers from heat once the cheese is melted and gooey. Place the toasted top buns on each burger. Garnish with optional grated Parmesan cheese or fresh basil leaves for added flavor and presentation. Serve immediately, pairing with your favorite sides like fries or a crisp salad.

Notes

  • For juicier patties, use ground beef with 20% fat content (80/20 ratio).
  • Do not overmix the beef mixture to avoid tough burgers.
  • Pressing a dimple in the center of patties helps them cook evenly and reduces puffing.
  • Light toasting burger buns prevents sogginess once sauce is added.
  • The optional sautéed toppings enhance flavor and texture but can be omitted for simplicity.
  • Use a meat thermometer to ensure patties reach a safe internal temperature of 160°F (71°C).
  • If you prefer, substitute beef pepperoni with turkey or vegetarian slices.
  • Fresh basil and Parmesan garnish add authentic Italian flair but are optional.
