These Hot Roll Sandwiches make an easy and flavorful lunch option, combining buttery seasoned rolls with layers of provolone cheese, deli ham, and a blend of mozzarella and Parmesan cheeses. Optional fresh spinach and pickles add a crisp, tangy contrast. Baked to melty perfection, they are simple to prepare and delightful to enjoy.

Ingredients

Rolls and Butter Mixture

  • 4 large sub rolls, sliced horizontally
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 tbsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper

Sandwich Fillings

  • 8 slices provolone cheese
  • ½ lb deli ham
  • ½ cup shredded mozzarella
  • ¼ cup grated Parmesan
  • 1 cup baby spinach (optional)
  • ½ cup sliced pickles (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prep the oven and butter mixture: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). In a small bowl, thoroughly mix the softened unsalted butter with garlic powder, onion powder, dried oregano, salt, and black pepper to create a flavorful spread.
  2. Prepare the rolls: Slice the sub rolls horizontally to create sandwich bases. Spread the seasoned butter evenly inside each roll, ensuring good coverage for maximum flavor. Place the buttered rolls on a foil-lined baking sheet, buttered side up.
  3. Assemble the sandwiches: On each buttered bottom roll half, layer slices of provolone cheese followed by the deli ham. Add baby spinach and sliced pickles if using. Then sprinkle the shredded mozzarella and grated Parmesan cheese evenly on top.
  4. Bake covered: Cover the assembled sandwiches loosely with foil and bake in the preheated oven for 10 minutes to melt the cheeses and warm the meats and vegetables.
  5. Bake uncovered: Remove the foil and continue baking for an additional 5 minutes to allow the cheese topping to brown slightly and the rolls to become a bit crispy.
  6. Serve: Let the sandwiches cool slightly after baking. Then slice them if desired, and serve warm for a deliciously melty lunch treat.

Notes

  • Optional spinach and pickles add freshness and tang but can be omitted if preferred.
  • For a crispier crust, bake uncovered the entire time but be cautious not to burn the rolls.
  • Use fresh sub rolls for best texture and flavor.
  • Adjust seasoning amounts in the butter spread to taste.
