Ingredients

For the Pastry

  • 1 sheet Puff Pastry (store-bought)

For the Filling

  • 6 slices Streaky Bacon, cooked and chopped
  • 1 cup Shredded Cheddar Cheese (or your favorite cheese)
  • 1/2 cup Grated Parmesan Cheese
  • 4 oz Cream Cheese (optional)
  • 2 tbsp Sour Cream (optional)

For Seasoning

  • 1 tsp Dried Garlic Powder
  • 1/2 tsp Black Pepper (to taste)
  • 1/2 tsp Turmeric or Paprika (optional)

For Finishing Touches

  • 1 unit Egg Yolk (for egg wash)
  • 2 tbsp Fresh Parsley (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 200°C (390°F) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and ensure easy cleanup.
  2. Prepare Pastry: Roll out the puff pastry on a lightly floured surface until it measures about ⅛-inch thick, providing a thin and even base for the filling.
  3. Apply Cream Cheese Layer: If using, spread cream cheese and sour cream evenly over the surface of the puff pastry to add richness and moisture.
  4. Add Cheeses and Seasoning: Evenly top the cream cheese layer with shredded cheddar and grated Parmesan cheese. Then sprinkle dried garlic powder, black pepper, and turmeric or paprika (if using) to enhance flavor and color.
  5. Place Bacon: Arrange the cooked and chopped bacon strips evenly on top of the cheese and press them in slightly so they adhere to the filling.
  6. Cut and Twist Pastry: Slice the entire pastry into 1-inch wide strips. Take each strip and twist it several times to create spiral shapes that will puff up nicely when baked.
  7. Apply Egg Wash: Beat the egg yolk and gently brush it over each twisted strip to give them a shiny, golden finish when baked.
  8. Bake: Place the twists on the prepared baking sheet, leaving some space between them to allow for expansion, and bake for 20-25 minutes until they turn golden brown and crispy.
  9. Cool and Serve: Remove from the oven and allow the twists to cool slightly on the baking sheet. Optionally, sprinkle fresh parsley over the top before serving warm for a fresh touch.

Notes

  • You can substitute cheddar with other melty cheeses like mozzarella or gouda for a variation in flavor.
  • For a spicier kick, add a pinch of cayenne pepper or red chili flakes to the seasoning.
  • Make sure the bacon is cooked crisp to prevent sogginess in the pastry.
  • Egg wash is essential to achieve that beautiful golden color and glossy finish.
  • Twists can be prepared ahead and baked just before serving to maintain freshness and crispness.
