These Easy Ham and Cheese Calzones are homemade pockets of deliciousness, filled with a savory mix of ham, mozzarella, ricotta, and Parmesan cheeses, seasoned with oregano and garlic powder. Perfectly golden and flaky on the outside, they make a comforting meal or snack that’s quick to prepare and bake in the oven.

Ingredients

Calzone Dough

  • 1 pound pizza dough

Filling

  • 1 cup cooked ham, diced
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup ricotta cheese
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

Assembly and Finishing

  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven: Set your oven to 425°F (220°C) to ensure it reaches the proper temperature by the time your calzones are ready to bake.
  2. Prepare dough circles: On a floured surface, divide the pizza dough into four equal portions. Roll each portion into an approximately 8-inch diameter circle to form the base for each calzone.
  3. Make the filling: In a mixing bowl, combine diced ham, shredded mozzarella, ricotta, Parmesan cheese, dried oregano, and garlic powder. Mix well to evenly distribute the seasonings and cheeses.
  4. Fill the dough: Spoon a quarter of the cheese and ham mixture onto one half of each dough circle, keeping a border around the edges free to allow sealing.
  5. Seal calzones: Brush the edges of the dough circles with beaten egg, fold over the filling to form a half-moon shape, then press the edges firmly with a fork to seal and prevent leakage during baking.
  6. Prepare for baking: Place the sealed calzones on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Brush the tops lightly with olive oil for a golden crust, and cut a small slit on top of each calzone to allow steam to escape while baking. Optionally, sprinkle extra cheese on top for added flavor.
  7. Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes until the calzones are puffed and golden brown on the outside.
  8. Serve: Let the calzones cool slightly before slicing or serving to allow fillings to set and avoid burns.

Notes

  • Make sure to seal the edges tightly with the fork to prevent filling from leaking out.
  • Feel free to add vegetables like spinach or bell peppers to the filling for extra nutrition and flavor.
  • If you want a crispier crust, bake on a preheated pizza stone instead of a baking sheet.
  • Leftover calzones can be stored in the refrigerator and reheated in the oven for best results.
