Delightfully sweet and tangy Candied Orange Slices made by simmering thin orange rounds in a sugar syrup, perfect as a natural snack or elegant garnish. Optionally dipped in dark chocolate or coated with sanding sugar for an extra touch of decadence.

Ingredients

Oranges

  • 2 large oranges

Syrup

  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup water

Optional Coatings

  • 1/2 cup sanding sugar (optional)
  • 4 oz dark chocolate (optional)

Instructions

  1. Slice Oranges: Slice the oranges into 1/4-inch thick rounds, carefully removing any seeds to prevent bitterness and unpleasant texture during cooking.
  2. Prepare Sugar Syrup: In a medium saucepan, combine the granulated sugar and water. Heat over medium until the mixture comes to a gentle simmer, ensuring the sugar fully dissolves.
  3. Simmer Orange Slices: Add the orange slices to the simmering syrup. Let them simmer gently for 45 minutes, flipping the slices occasionally to ensure even cooking and candying on both sides.
  4. Dry the Candied Slices: Carefully remove the orange slices from the syrup using a slotted spoon and place them on a wire rack. Allow them to dry and set for 4 to 6 hours at room temperature until they are tacky but not wet.
  5. Optional Decoration: For added sweetness and visual appeal, either dip the dried candied orange slices into melted dark chocolate or roll them in sanding sugar. Let chocolate set before serving.

Notes

  • Use navel or other sweet oranges for best flavor and minimal bitterness.
  • Ensure orange slices are evenly cut to allow uniform cooking.
  • Drying time can be extended if you prefer firmer slices.
  • Store candied slices in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week.
  • Optional chocolate dipping adds richness but can be omitted for a vegan option if using vegan chocolate.
